The desk study should be carried out as the preliminary stage of any site investigation and is typically required to satisfy planning conditions.
The aims of this are to formulate a conceptual site model, which highlights the potential sources of contamination, the receptors and pathways between them.
A targeted intrusive investigation can then be based upon the information in the desk study.
The typical main components of a desk study are:
- Walkover Survey of the site
- Historical Map Review
- Geology, Hydrology and Hydrogeology
- Landfill and Trade database search
- WW2 Bomb Damage Maps (Central London)
- Aerial Photographs
- Regulatory and Local Authority consultation
- Conceptual Site Model & Risk Assessment
